Local Notice to Mariners No. 101 of 2018


Fireworks – From Barge off Il-Ponta ta’ Dragunara 

in St Julian’s


The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies that firework displays will be let off from a barge moored off Il-Ponta ta’ Dragunara in St Julian’s. The barge will be moored in position at point A (as shown on chart found on the Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt)) on Thursday, 20th September, 2018.

On Wednesday, 19th September, 2018, at 8.00 a.m., the barge B17 will berth alongside the quay at Id-Daħla tar-Rinella in Kalkara. It will remain berthed there through the night.


Fireworks will then be loaded on the barge during the night and will depart on Thursday, 20th September, 2018, at 9.00 a.m. to St Julian’s.


Vessel owners moored in Rinella Bay are to remove their vessels from Wednesday, 19th September, 2018 at 8.00 a.m. to Thursday, 20th September, 2018, at 9.00 a.m. and on Friday, 21st September, 2018, between 8.00 a.m. and noon. Transport Malta will accept no liabilities whatsoever for any damage caused to vessels that are left within Rinella Bay in the mentioned dates and times.


On Thursday, 20th September, 2018, the barge loaded with fireworks will be moored at point A. The firework displays will take place as follows:


from 10.15 p.m. till 10.30 p.m. and


from 00.30 a.m. till 00.45 a.m. (on Friday, 21st September, 2018).


All vessels and bathers are warned to keep well clear and maintain a safe distance of not less than 200 metres from the barge during the transportation of the barge from Id-Daħla tar-Rinella to Il-Ponta ta’ Dragunara and while it is moored at point A.  


Mariners are to note the above and navigate with particular caution and slow speed when in the vicinity of barge B17. Any instructions and directions given by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF channel 12 and by Maritime Enforcement Officers are to be complied with.


 

The barge will then be transported back to the quay in Id-Daħla tar-Rinella in Kalkara departing St Julian’s on Friday, 21st September, 2018, at 4.00 a.m.

Restricted Area at Il-Bajja ta’ San Tumas


The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies mariners and owners of vessels that due to falling rocks from the cliff face at Il-Bajja ta’ San Tumas, the area between points A, B, C, D and the intermediate coastline has been declared dangerous.


The limit will be delineated by a floating rope supported by black and white buoys connecting points A, B, C and D.

Core Drilling at Għadira Bay in Mellieħa


The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners that with immediate effect core drilling will be carried out at Għadira Bay in Mellieħa at points A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J and K as indicated on chart found on Transport Malta’s website (www.transport.gov.mt). Weather permitting, works are to be completed by end of September 2018.

The works will be carried out using the barge ‘B 45’ which will display lights and shapes as per COLREGS. The barge will deploy anchors at approximately 100m away.


Due to the abovementioned works, the swimmer zone will be shifted according to the exigencies of the working barge, which will depend upon the weather conditions. Refer to Local Notice to Mariners No. 43 of 2018 – item 12 – Mellieħa Bay. The lifeguards and beach crew will be co-ordinating bathing activities within the swimming zone.


Masters and operators of vessels are advised to keep a sharp lookout, navigate with caution and slow speed and give the above positions a wide berth of 100m. They are to comply with instructions given by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12.

Local Notice to Mariners No. 98 of 2018


Filming – Il-Ħofra ż-Żgħira, Delimara


The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies all mariners and sea vessel operators that filming activities will take place at Il-Ħofra ż-Żgħira.


The filming activities will be carried out between Monday, 10th September, 2018 and Monday, 17th September, 2018.


Due to the filming activities, mariners are informed that vessels will not be allowed to enter beyond the imaginary line joining point A (Ras il-Qali) and point B (Ras il-Fenek), as indicated on chart found on Transport Malta’s website (www.transport.gov.mt), during the abovementioned days.


Mariners and vessel operators are to keep watch on VHF Channel 12, keep a sharp look out and navigate at slow speed when in the vicinity of the above area during the mentioned days. They are to comply with instructions issued by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12. They are also to obey any instructions given by Maritime Enforcement Personnel in the area.

Filming – in Different Localities in Malta and Gozo – 

One Breath


The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies all mariners and sea vessel operators that filming activities will take place at Dwejra in Gozo, Bighi and Il-Bajja ta’ Fomm ir-Riħ in Malta as listed below.


Il-Bajja ta’ Fomm ir-Riħ


Filming will be carried out within the area enclosed by the imaginary line C D as shown on chart A on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt). Mariners are informed that no vessel will be allowed to anchor or enter this area during the following dates. 


Friday, 7th September, 2018 and Saturday, 8th September, 2018    


Bighi in the Grand Harbour 


Filming will be carried out from on the MV DELFINI which will be anchored within the area hatched as indicated on chart B on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt) during the following dates and times:


Friday, 14th September, 2018 from 7.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. and


Saturday, 15th September, 2018 from 7.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.


Mariners and vessel owners are to give way to the vessels involved in the filming even while crossing from the filming site to the quay at Bighi Bay in Kalkara which is the base for this filming.


Dwejra in Gozo 


Filming will be carried out within the area enclosed by the imaginary line A B as shown on chart C found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt). Mariners are informed that no vessel will be allowed to anchor or enter this area during the following date and times.


On Monday, 17th September, 2018 from 7.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. 

 

Mariners and vessel operators are requested to keep a sharp look out and navigate at very slow speed when sailing in the vicinity of the above areas.


They are to keep watch on VHF Channel 12 and cooperate with the maritime enforcement officers in the area. They are to comply with instructions issued by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF channel 12.

On Tuesday, 28th August, 2018, from 9.00 a.m. till 9.10 a.m., from noon till 12.10 p.m., from 8.30 p.m. till 9.00 p.m. and from 10.30 p.m. till 11.00 p.m.


On Friday, 14th September, 2018, from 8.30 p.m. till 10.00 p.m. and from 10.30 p.m. till 11.59 p.m. 


On Saturday, 15th September, 2018, from 9.00 a.m. till 9.15 a.m., from noon till 12.15 p.m. and from 10.00 p.m. till 11.15 p.m. 

 

On Sunday, 16th September, 2018, from 10.00 a.m. till 1.00 p.m.   


Vessels moored within 200 metres from point A and point B (as shown on chart found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt)) are to be removed and the area kept clear during the displays. Furthermore, all vessels and bathers are warned to keep clear and maintain a minimum distance of not less than 200 meters from point A and point B during the above-mentioned displays.


The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta will accept no liabilities whatsoever for any vessels that are left lying in the area on the above-mentioned date and times.

Malta – Gozo – Malta Open Water Swimming 

Competition – 2018


The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners that a Malta – Gozo – Malta open water swimming competition will be held on Saturday, 25th August,, 2018.


A group of participants will depart from Ir-Ramla tal-Bir (Malta), point B (as shown on chart found on Transport Malta’s website (www.transport.gov.mt)), at approximately 6.30 a.m. They will swim to the East of Comino and then to Il-Bajja ta’ Ħondoq ir-Rummien (Gozo), point A (as shown on chart found on Transport Malta’s website (www.transport.gov.mt)) and back to Ir-Ramla tal-Bir (Malta) point B.


Another group of participants will depart from Il-Bajja ta’ Ħondoq ir-Rummien (Gozo), point A (as shown on chart found on Transport Malta’s website (www.transport.gov.mt)), at approximately 8.15 a.m. also. They will swim to the East of Comino and finish at Ir-Ramla tal-Bir (Malta), point B (as shown on chart found on Transport Malta’s website (www.transport.gov.mt)).


The swims are to be completed by 11.30 a.m.

They are to obey any instructions issued by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF channel 12 and maritime enforcement assets in the area.

On Friday, 31st August, 2018, from 10.35 p.m. till 10.45 p.m.,

On Saturday, 1st September, 2018, from 10.30 p.m. till 10.45 p.m.,

On Sunday, 2nd September, 2018, from 8.30 p.m. till 9.45 p.m.


All vessels and bathers are warned to keep clear and maintain a minimum distance of not less than 100 meters from the Jetty (as shown chart found on Transport Malta’s website (www.transport.gov.mt)) during the above-mentioned displays.

Firework Displays in Grand Harbour – Senglea Feast


The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies mariners that firework displays will be let off from three barges next to each other moored 200m off Il-Ponta ta’ Bighi, centered on position Y in chart found on Transport Malta’s website (www.transport.gov.mt).


The firework displays will be let off on the following dates and times:


On Tuesday, 4th September, 2018, from 8.00 a.m. till 8.30 a.m., from noon till 12.30 p.m., and from 8.40 p.m. till 9.30 p.m.

On Wednesday, 5th September, 2018, from 8.00 a.m. till 8.30 a.m., from noon till 12.30 p.m., and from 8.00 p.m. till 9.00 p.m.

On Thursday, 6th September, 2018, from 8.00 a.m. till 8.30 a.m., from noon till 12.30 p.m., and from 9.45 p.m. till 11.00 p.m.

On Friday, 7th September, 2018, from 8.00 a.m. till 9.30 a.m., from noon till 12.30 p.m., from 5.15 p.m. till 6.30 p.m., and from 9.15 p.m. till 11.45 p.m.

A wide berth of 200 meters is requested from the barges on these days as the barges will be loaded with fireworks.


Vessel owners moored in Rinella Bay are to remove their vessels from Monday, 3rd September, 2018 to Monday, 10th September, 2018. Transport Malta will accept no liabilities whatsoever for any damage caused to vessels that are left within Rinella Bay in the mentioned dates. 


Transport Malta will accept no liabilities whatsoever for any damage caused to vessels that are within the 200m distance during the above-mentioned dates and times.


Mariners are to navigate with caution and slow speed.  Instructions and directions given by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12 are to be complied with.

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies that the area at Qawra Point mentioned in Local Notice to Mariners No. 36 of 2018 regarding Removal of vessel MT Hephaestus wreck at Qawra Point is now clear and all restrictions lifted.

Fireworks Displays in St Julian’s Bay

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies that fireworks displays in connection with the feast of St Julian’s, will be let off from 4 pontoons moored in St Julian’s Bay. The pontoons will be moored in position (as shown on chart found on Transport Malta’s website (www.transport.gov.mt)) on Saturday, 25th August, 2018.

The fireworks display will take place as follows:

On Saturday, 25th August, 2018, between 9.30 p.m. and 10.30 p.m. 

On Sunday, 26th August, 2018,   between noon and 12.15 p.m. and between 8.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m.

All vessels and bathers are warned to keep well clear and maintain a safe distance of not less than 60 metres from pontoons 1 and 2 and 100 metres from pontoons 3 and 4, during the above-mentioned displays.  Mariners are to note the above and navigate with particular caution as the pontoons may remain moored in position during the night.

8th September Regatta in Grand Harbour, Valletta


The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies that the 8 September Regatta will be held in Grand Harbour. Sinkers and marker buoys will be laid as follows:


1. On Thursday, 6th and Friday, 7th September, 2018, 3 sinkers with yellow flashing marker buoys will be laid in the following positions:

2. On Saturday, 8th September, 2018 as from 8.00 a.m., wire ropes with floats will be laid in the following positions:


(i) from buoy (B) off St Angelo Point to buoy (C) near Senglea Point.


(ii)  from buoy (C) North of Senglea Point to point (D) West of Senglea Point opposite the entrance to French Creek;


(iii) from point (A) ashore on Barriera Wharf to buoy point (B) off St Angelo Point:

3. The wire ropes, floats and buoys mentioned in 2 above will be removed on the completion of the Regatta at approximately 6.30 p.m. on Saturday, 8th September, 2018.


4. The sinkers and marker buoys mentioned in 1 above will then be removed on Monday, 10th September, 2018.


Masters of all vessels are notified that on Saturday 8th September, 2018, between 9.00 a.m. and about 7.30 p.m., incoming vessels will not be allowed to proceed to any berth South West of the imaginary line joining point (A) on Barriera Wharf and Fortizza Sant’Anġlu flagstaff.  Vessels in ‘Il-Marsa’ sea area will not be allowed to proceed beyond the starting line indicated in 2(iv) above after 9.00 a.m. No vessel will be allowed near the finishing line except those involved in the races. No movements of vessels will be allowed inside Grand Harbour, except by special permission. All vessels are to keep a minimum distance of 5m away from the lines and floats mentioned in 2(ii), 2(iii) and 2(iv).


Incoming vessels will not be allowed to proceed to any berth South-West of the imaginary line which is 150m North-East of the finish line (A) to (B) mentioned in 2(i) above. No vessel will be allowed to stay within this 150m area.


Masters of all vessels are also warned that the wire ropes and floats may cause a physical obstruction and consequently they are to navigate with extreme caution. Caution is also to be exercised when in the vicinity of such wire ropes and floats when these are being laid or removed.


Mariners are to obey any instructions issued by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12 and Maritime enforcement officers in the area.

Maintenance Works on Head of Pontoon A at Mġarr Harbour – Gozo


The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners that maintenance works will be carried out on the head of pontoon A at Mġarr Harbour – Gozo.


The works are to start on Thursday, 9th August, 2018, at 7.00 a.m., and are expected to be completed by noon on the same day.


The works will involve the use of divers. Transport Malta RHIB will be assisting in the works.


Masters and operators of vessels are advised to keep a sharp lookout, navigate with caution and very slow speed when in the vicinity. They are to comply with any instructions given by Transport Malta personnel on site and Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12.

Farm – RE-ESTABLISHED

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners that the North-east marker buoy at south-east offshore fish farm has been re-established in the following position:

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners that aerial fireworks will be let off from St. Elmo Point Valletta - Marsamxett Harbour (point A as shown on chart found on Transport Malta website (http://www.transport.gov.mt)) on the date and times as follows:


Sunday, 5th August, 2018   

from 8.00 a.m till 8.15 a.m.,

from noon till 12.15 p.m, and

from 7.00 p.m. till 8.30 p.m.


Vessels moored within 200 metres from point A (as shown on chart found on Transport Malta website (http://www.transport.gov.mt) are to be removed and the area kept clear during the displays. The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta will accept no liabilities whatsoever for any vessels that are left lying in the area on the above-mentioned date and times.

Balluta Bay experimental re-nourishment project

 

 

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies mariners that the Balluta Bay experimental re-nourishment project is expected to start on Monday, 16th July, 2018.

 

Owners of vessels that are moored or have a mooring within or just outside Balluta Bay are to remove them by Sunday, 15th July, 2018. Any vessels and moorings that are left in this area after the stipulated date will be removed at the expense of the owner. No liability whatsoever will be accepted by the Authority for any damage that may be caused while removing the said vessels and moorings.

 

Furthermore, mariners are reminded that it is prohibited to lay any moorings and ground tackle without the prior permission of the Authority.

 

In view of the above mariners navigating in the area are to navigate with caution and very slow ‘no wake’ speed. They are to give the above area a wide berth and obey instructions as given by the Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12.

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners and owners of vessels that due to falling rocks from the cliff face at Tignè, the area shown on chart shown on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt) between points A and B and the intermediate coastline has been declared dangerous.

 

The limit will be delineated by a floating rope supported by black and white buoys connected to the shore at points A and B.

Ground fireworks will be let off from point B, as shown on chart found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt), between Saturday, 30th June, 2018, at 11.00 p.m., and Sunday, 1st July, 2018, at 00.30 a.m. In view of this ground fireworks display all vessels moored within the indicated hatched area off point B (as shown on chart found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt)) are to be removed on the mentioned dates and times of the fireworks displays. 


The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta will accept no liabilities whatsoever for any vessels that are left lying in the area on the above-mentioned dates and times.

Malta – Comino – Malta Swimming event

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners that a Malta – Comino – Malta swimming event will be held on Wednesday, 20th June, 2018.


Participants will depart from ir-Ramla tat-Torri, Armier, point A, at approximately 8.00 a.m. They will swim to point B, C, D, E and then point F back in Ir-Ramla tat-Torri, Armier.

The swim is to be completed by 1.00 p.m.

If the event cannot be held due to bad weather conditions it will be held on Thursday, 21st June, 2018, at the same place and time.

Support vessels will accompany the participating swimmers.

Mariners are advised to keep a sharp lookout and navigate at slow speed and keep well clear of the area during the stipulated time giving the swimmers a wide berth. They are to obey any instructions issued by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12 and maritime enforcement assets in the area.

Hydrographic Survey in Marsamxett Harbour

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners that a Hydrographic survey will be carried out in Marsamxett Harbour by the survey motor boat (SMB) Sapphire.
The survey will start with immediate effect and will be concluded by Friday, 29th June, 2018.

The survey motor boat will be restricted in her ability to manoeuvre.

During the duration of the survey No Diving will be allowed in all Marsamxett Harbour.

Mariners are instructed to keep a sharp lookout, navigate with caution when in the vicinity of the above-mentioned survey motor boat and give it a wide berth. They are to obey any instructions issued by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12 during the time of survey.

Barge Moored at Manoel Island

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies mariners that a flat barge will be moored at Manoel Island as indicated on the chart found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt).

The barge will be moored in position on Thursday, 14th June, 2018, and removed on Saturday, 16th June, 2018.

Vessels with a maximum overall length of 40 meters will berth stern to this barge to unload passengers. The unloading of passengers will take place on Thursday, 15th June, 2018, in the afternoon.

Mariners and operators of vessels are advised to keep a sharp lookout, proceed with caution, at very slow speed and give the area a wide berth of at least 100 metres from the coast. 

Moreover, they are to comply with instructions given by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12.

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners that a round Malta world record attempt will be held on Friday, 8th June, 2018, weather permitting. 


Two white buoys will be laid in position A and A1, in the early morning, to indicate the start/finish gate as indicated on chart found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt).

Power Boat Rehearsal in Connection with the Valletta Pageant of the Seas – 2018

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies mariners that a power boat rehearsal in connection with the Valletta Pageant of the Seas event will be held in the Grand Harbour on Saturday, 2nd June, 2018.


Mariners are informed that due to the above rehearsal, part of the Grand Harbour, Valletta, will be restricted to all vessels from 5.00 p.m. until 7.00 p.m., local time, except to those vessels with prior authorisation.

The restricted area is delineated by the imaginary lines joining the points A - B, C - D, E - F, G - H, I - J, K - L, M - N and the intermediate coastline.

During the event, shipping movements in all the Grand Harbour will be restricted.

Mariners are to comply with instructions and directions issued by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12 and enforcement personnel that will be in the area.

Wreck Site – May 2018

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies all mariners and sea vessel operators that underwater filming activities will take place in Comino at the P31 wreck site, in the area shown circled on chart 1 found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt).

The filming activities will be carried out on Tuesday, 29th and Wednesday, 30th May, 2018 from 9.00 a.m. till 1.00 p.m. at the area known as il-Matz Comino.

Unauthorised vessels are to keep the above area clear during the mentioned dates and times.

Mariners and vessel operators are to keep watch on VHF Channel 12, keep a sharp look out and navigate at slow speed when in the vicinity of the above area during the mentioned dates and times. They are to comply with instructions issued by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF channel 12.

Valletta Pageant of the Seas – 2018

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies mariners that the “Valletta Pageant of the Seas” event will be held in the Grand Harbour on Thursday, 7th June, 2018, with a rehearsal being held on Tuesday, 5th June, 2018.

The Valletta Pageant of the Seas event will include the use of barges, lit buoys, pontoons, power boats, sailing yachts and fireworks display. The closure of the Grand Harbour will also come into effect on the dates noted below.

On Tuesday, 5th June, 2018 

A rehearsal will be held on this day, with traffic restrictions coming into force within the Grand Harbour as shown on Chart 1 on the Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt), from 6.00 p.m. until 11.59 p.m., except to those vessels with prior authorisation.

Non-authorised vessels are to obtain the necessary clearance from Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12.

A restricted area, bound by imaginary lines F-G-H-I-J, will be in force during the rehearsal as shown on chart 1 on the Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt) in the following positions:

Two (2) additional flashing light buoys, numbered 7-8, will be laid before 3.30 p.m., as shown on chart 1 on the Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt).

Barges will be positioned following port closure at 3.30 p.m.

The Grand Harbour will be closed to all vessels, from  3.30 p.m. until 11.30 p.m. Imaginary lines that bind the restricted area between the points K - L – M - N – O, P – Q, R – S – T – U – V – W and X as shown on chart 2 on the Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt).

No vessels will be permitted to stay South West of the imaginary line W – X unless authorised and berthed alongside any available quays.

The approaches to the fairway between the breakwaters, is to be kept clear during these hours.

During the event, no vessel will be allowed within the restricted area unless previously authorised.

Mariners are to comply with instructions and directions issued by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12, Police, Armed Forces of Malta and Transport Malta Enforcement that will be in the area.

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, will not be held responsible or liable in any manner whatsoever for any damages or expenses incurred by any person as a consequence of these fireworks’ displays, including for failing to abide and comply with the above directions.

Any vessels and moorings that are left in this area after the stipulated date will be removed. No liability whatsoever will be accepted by the authority for any damage that may be caused while removing the said vessels and moorings.

Conduct of Small Craft inside Maltese Harbours

The Authority for Transport in Malta draws the attention of masters, owners and operators of small craft, including but not limited to yachts, fishing vessels, craft used for water sports and craft under sail and/or under oars are not to impede the passage of, or hinder the manoeuvre of, larger commercial vessels inside any part of the Maltese ports, declared under Article 3 of the Ports and Shipping Act (Chapter 352 of the Laws of Malta), and the approaches thereto.

Without prejudice to any other legal provisions, including those of the laws mentioned hereunder, special reference is being made to:

(i) Regulation 21 of the Ports Regulations (S.L. 499.01);

(ii) Rule 9 of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972, as enacted under the Merchant Shipping Act (Chapter 234 of the Laws of Malta).

Enforcement action will be immediately taken in the event of non-compliance, without prejudice to any other legal action.

Notice to Mariners No. 9 of 2001 is hereby superseded.

 Vodafone Connect Challenge (Kayak) Gozo
to Comino – 2018

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies that Vodafone will be organising a Kayak event between Mġarr Marina, Gozo, and Santa Marija Bay, Comino. This event will be held on Friday, 18th May, 2018.

Participants will depart at 10.45 a.m. from inside Mġarr Marina, Gozo, next to the North Breakwater arm to head towards Ħondoq Ir-Rummien, Gozo, and then towards Santa Marija Bay, Comino, as indicated on chart found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt).

The participants will then return back to Mġarr Marina using the same route.

The activity will be finished at approximately 1.30 p.m., weather permitting.

Support vessels will accompany the participating kayakers.

Mariners are advised to keep a sharp lookout and navigate at slow speed and keep well clear of the area during the stipulated date and time giving the participants a wide berth. They are to obey any instructions issued by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12.

Mariners are informed that works are in progress to replace/refurbish existing pontoons at Dockyard Creek.  This will involve the replacing/refurbishing of pontoons at the head of the pontoons and their related mooring systems.  These works will be carried out with the assistance of divers who will be working in the area.

In view of the above with immediate effect and until further notice, entrance to Dockyard Creek is restricted. Only boat owners who have berths at Dockyard Creek and the ferry boat service may enter this area.


These masters are to navigate with extreme caution and at very low speed.

Fireworks Display – Grand Harbour 
(Seabourn Ovation Christening)

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies mariners that a fireworks display will be held in Grand Harbour on Friday, 11th May, 2018.

Fireworks will be let off from a row of pontoons placed off Pinto Wharves 1 and 2, as shown on the chart which can be found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt).

The pontoons will be laid in position on Friday, 11th May, 2018, from 6.30 p.m., and will be removed immediately after the displays finish.

The short fireworks display will be held between 10.00 p.m. and 11.00 p.m.

In view of the above, mariners are informed that part of Grand Harbour, between the imaginary lines A-B, B-C, C-D and the intermediate coastline, as shown on the chart which can be found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt), will have restricted passage between 6.30 p.m. and11.00 p.m.

During the event shipping movements in Grand Harbour will be restricted. No vessel will be allowed within the restricted area, unless authorised by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12.
 
Authorised vessels are to give the display pontoons a wide berth of at least 150m. No movements whatsoever will be allowed during the actual displays.

Mariners are to comply with instructions and directions issued by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12 and Maritime Enforcement Officers that will be in the area.

Sailing around Comino – May 2018

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta would like to notify mariners that a sailing regatta will be held on Sunday, 6th May, 2018.

The sailing regatta will start at noon and will be finished by 4.00 p.m.

The start and finish line is between the points A and B and the participants will follow the course, sailing in a clockwise direction, as shown on the chart which can be found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt).

There will be a number of support vessels along the route.

Masters of all vessels not directly involved in this sailing regatta are to keep a sharp lookout and keep clear of the racing course. They are also to obey any instructions given by the race organisers, safety vessels and by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12.

Repair Works on St Elmo Breakwater Arm, 
Grand Harbour – Valletta

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners that with immediate effect repair works will be carried out on St Elmo Breakwater Arm, Grand Harbour, Valletta, and are expected to be completed by the end of June 2018.


The works will be carried out within the area shown hatched in blue as indicated in the chart shown on the website of Transport Malta (http://www.transport.gov.mt) and consists of the retrieval of hard stone slabs from the seabed and replacing missing coping slabs.

A diver will be involved in the works and will be assisted by the crane barge M/V Gold Dredger.

Masters and vessel operators are instructed that with immediate effect and until further notice they are to keep a sharp lookout, navigate with caution and slow speed and give the barge/diver a wide berth.

Masters of all vessels are also advised to keep a constant watch on VHF channel 12 for any new information which will be advised by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS).

Fireworks Display in Grand Harbour

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies mariners that a fireworks display will be held in Grand Harbour on Monday, 30th April, 2018.

Fireworks will be let off from a row of pontoons and barge placed off St Angelo Point.

The pontoons between the points Y and Z will be placed in position, on Monday, 30th April, 2018, from 9.30 a.m. onwards, and will be removed immediately after the displays finish.

The barge off St Angelo Point will be placed in position X, on Monday, 30th April, 2018, in the morning.

During the event shipping movements in Grand Harbour will be restricted. No vessel will be allowed within the restricted area, except by arrangement through the Organising Committee. Authorised craft are to give the display pontoons a wide berth of at least 200m. No movements whatsoever will be allowed during the actual displays.

Sailing Regatta in Il-Bajja ta’ Marsaxlokk – April 2018

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners that the Birzebbuġa Sailing Club shall be holding the Malta Annual Spring Regatta for dinghies on Saturday, 21st April, 2018 and Sunday, 22nd April, 2018. 


Races shall be held between 10.30 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. (local time) on both days.

Class races shall be held over two (2) adjacent upwind/downwind courses, centered in the selected sailing area depending on the weather conditions at the time. The diagram showing areas A, B and C can be found in the chart in Transport Malta’s website (www.transport.gov.mt).

The courses shall be defined by inflatable marks of about 1.5 meters high around which the competitors shall have to sail.

Races will be held when no merchant traffic is scheduled to enter or depart from the Malta Freeport Terminals. 


Masters of all craft not directly involved in this Sailing Regatta are asked to keep clear of the racing area, especially at each of the turning marks and observe any instructions that may be given by the race organisers’ safety craft and by Marsaxlokk Port Control (Marsaxlokk VTS) on VHF Channel 14.

A minimum safety clearing distance of 5 metres from the swimmers’ zone is to be maintained.

For the benefit and safety of all bathers and mariners, Transport Malta urges all visitors and commercial vessels to adhere to these arrangements. Enforcement Officers will be constantly patrolling the area.


Mariners are advised to keep a good lookout and navigate with caution and at slow speed in the North Comino Channel at Blue Lagoon and Santa Marija Bay. They are also reminded that it is prohibited to secure/moor any vessel to any of the marker buoys, swimmers’ zone delineation markers and related gear belonging to Transport Malta.

The fieldwork will start on Monday, 16th April, 2018, and is expected to be completed by Friday, 20th April, 2018. However, if due to bad weather conditions the work cannot be carried out during the mentioned time frame, the completion date may be extended until mid of May, 2018.

The geophysical survey may include the use of divers and will be carried out within the area A, B, C, D and the intermediate coastline, as shown on chart shown on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt).

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners that St. Elmo Breakwater Bridge has been extensively damaged, in its deck and railings. Repairs are underway to repair this damage.

Masters and vessel operators are instructed that with immediate effect and until further notice they are not to navigate below the above-mentioned bridge due to the possibility of falling objects.

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies that further to Notice to Mariners No 2 of 2015, the Armed Forces of Malta will carry out Live Firing Practice on Wednesday, 17th, Thursday, 18th, Wednesday, 24th and Thursday, 25th January, 2018, with extended hours between 6.00 p.m. and 11.00 p.m. (Local Time).

The exercise area is delineated by sector ABC.

 Navigational Restrictions Grand Harbour,
Valletta – 20th January, 2018
 
The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners that navigational restrictions will be established in The Grand Harbour, Valletta on the 20th January 2018, in connection with Valletta 18.
 
The restrictions consist of:
1. Exclusion Zone from Saturday, 20th January, 2018 at 4.00 p.m. to Sunday, 21st January, 2018 at 2.00 a.m., within the area bounded by A, B, C, D and the intermediate coastline off Mediterranean Conference Centre (MCC), shown hatched in red on chart found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt).
 
2. No loitering will be allowed in the Grand Harbour fairway as indicated on chart found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt). Furthermore, any vessels that are moored in the above areas are to be removed immediately. No vessel is to remain in these restricted areas on the above dates and time.
 
Mariners are to note the above and contact Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS on VHF Channel 12) for instructions prior to navigating in or out of the Grand Harbour on this date.
 
Any instructions issued by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS on VHF Channel 12) and Maritime Enforcement Units in the area, are to be complied with.

The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta, notifies mariners that it has been reported that a temporary tuna farm has been established in the ‘North East off Malta’.
 
Due to the above, the area A, B, C, D, E and F shown hatched on chart found on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt), has been declared as a restricted area.

Wednesday, 10th January is a reserve date.

Local Notice to Mariners No. 137 of 2017

 
Diving Survey in Marsamxett Harbour

 
 The Ports and Yachting Directorate, Transport Malta notifies mariners that diving surveys will be carried out in the area enclosed by the imaginary lines between A – B, C – D, E – F and intermediate coast (shown hatched on chart shown on Transport Malta website (www.transport.gov.mt)), in Marsamxett Harbour, between Tuesday, 2nd January, 2018 and Friday, 16th February, 2018, weather permitting.

 
The survey will be carried out by scuba divers who will be assisted by the support vessel Atlantis II. The vessel will be moving slowly during the sampling period. The vessel will display the international code of Signals flag ‘A’ when divers are making the survey.

 
Masters and operators of vessels are advised to keep a sharp lookout, navigate with caution and slow speed when navigating in the above indicated area. They are to give the above support vessel a wide berth of at least 100m. They are to comply with instructions given by Valletta Port Control (Valletta VTS) on VHF Channel 12.
