Reference Number: PR180501, Press Release Issue Date: Mar 08, 2018

Minister for Home Affairs and National Security Michael Farrugia participated in the Justice and Home Affairs Council Meeting which was held in Brussels. The home affairs meeting agenda focused on security issues and migration, and was chaired by the Bulgarian Minister for the Interior Valentin Radev.

The ministers exchanged views on cooperation between the EU and the Western Balkans, and addressed the specific measures outlined in the European Commission’s strategy regarding security and migration in preparation for the EU-Western Balkans Summit in May.

The ministers held a policy debate on the interoperability proposals on EU information systems and discussed the current contributions of EU agencies to fight terrorism. Over lunch, the discussion focused on terrorist content online.

Also high on the agenda was a discussion on the state of play of migration. During his intervention, Minister Farrugia maintained that until migratory flows are reduced to a bare minimum, solidarity is pivotal, especially when it comes to supporting countries at the external borders of the EU. This goes hand in hand with the protection of European border management. EU member states need to work and cooperate together to support countries at the periphery and adopt the solidarity mechanism.

In the margins of the meeting, Minister Farrugia held bilateral discussions with the Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides, and the Director of Frontex Fabrice Leggeri. Furthermore, Minister Farrugia met with the Portuguese Minister for Internal Administration Eduardo Cabrita, the Belgian State Secretary for Asylum and Migration, for Administrative Simplification, Deputy Minister of Security and Interior Theo Francken.
